Synopsis

Album Description
Three months, thirty states, fifteen thousand miles, and one dog. Set in motion by a chance meeting with a brooklyn-bound subway rider calling himself "The Lonestar Hitchhiker", Don DiLego set out in search of inspiration to tell an account of the stranger's story...a story he hoped would write itself on the open road. It did. A collection of journal, observation, rhyme, and confession, "The Lonestar Hitchhiker" is Don's cinematic debut LP record. A concept album for the new millenium. Accept for a moment that the album draws significant inspiration from equal parts Johnny Cash, David Bowie, Wilco and Beck. An experiment in pop gone awry with all the subtle trappings of a rusty barbed-wire fence, bad cowboy poetry, and a coin-operated acoustic guitar. * * *

Some People Hitchhike for a Reason

(3 out of 5 stars)

"Don DiLego was inspired by a homeless man on the NYC subway to write all of The Lonestar Hitchhiker while traveling cross-country on Route 66. I didn't like Kerouac's On The Road much in college so I really shouldn't be surprised that this album didn't do much for me either. DiLego is not without famous traveling companions however as Imani Coppola guests on the title track and DiLego managed to wrangle his way into recording at NYC's Electric Lady studios. "Nicotine Prom Queen" is catchy though "The Vegas Man!" sounds as if it could be the theme song to Bonanza 2020. Maybe DiLego can get Hoss and Little Joe to pick him up next time."
