"This is the fifth volume in the Chronological Classics series on Don Byas, and perhaps the very best. All titles (except for the last) were recorded in Paris, mainly for Blue Star. Byas was at the height of his powers by this time, and whether playing slow ballads or up-tempo swingers the music he created was extraordinary. Often he's joined by American sidemen, including Peanuts Holland, Tyree Glenn, and Billy Taylor. There are many highlights here: I SURRENDER DEAR, HOW HIGH THE MOON, RED CROSS, and DYNAMO A, all taken up-tempo, are among the best. Byas was one of the best tenor sax players of all time, and these are some of his greatest recordings. Must-have stuff here."
