Dodsferd - Cursing Your Will to Live
Amy | outer space | 07/14/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Having heard F***ing Your Creation and thinking it was okay but sort of forgettable, I didn't really expect to be impressed with this either. I also expected to be bored to tears by the length of the songs, but I was not. As with any Dodsferd material, song titles are quite long and the tracklistings look like a short novel. Vocals sometimes border on histrionics, which would normally irritate me, but it fits here, and he sounds like he means it; it lends an air of credibility to songs that may otherwise be laughable, given titles like "Hypocritic S***f***ers Still Breathing." This Wrath fellow really and truly hates religious people and sounds incredibly p***ed off for the whole album.

There are a lot of samples which seem to be from horror movies but I can't quite place them. Musically it is on the melodic side with the guitars, and the songs are damnably catchy. I mean really catchy, this stuff gets stuck in my head for days on end. Despite its 8 minute song length, "I was challenged to enter the gates of blasphemy" is my favorite song on here. The guitars carry it along well, and though the riffs don't change much throughout, there is enough variation to make this interesting without getting overly repetitive. After a few listens I decided this is one of the best songs I've heard in years, and in general the songwriting on the album is very good. I usually skip "Under a broken cross I buried your world" due to it being a lot of screaming and sort of annoying, but the rest of the CD makes up for it. Several of the songs are just epic and I could listen to them on repeat all day. I put this on fully expecting to dislike it and now I find myself listening to it quite often."
