CD Reviews

Impressive musicianship

"This is easily one of Doc's best overall albums, and it is a great service to music fans that it is finally making it to CD. His skill is on full disply through various medleys of popular songs from the 70s era it came out of. Also a great tribute medley, paying homage to Doc's mentor, Louie Armstrong. Doc's skill ,in terms of power, range, and technique, are unmatched with this album. At the time of this album, he was vastly known as the Tonight Show Orchestra leader, and that sound, which was captured so well on the band's late-career albums in the 80s, is a far different sound than what you get here. If you haven't heard Doc outside of the Big Band format, this is a great way to experience the breadth of his talent. A truly terrific album."
The Very Best at his very best.

"I've been a fan of this album since first getting it on vinyl back in the `70's. Despite the dated musical stylings (overdone guitar wah-wah pedal, for example), this is a can't-miss CD because it is Doc at his absolute best. There are multiple points in this album that will make you hit the "rewind" button (er, excuse me, "back button") just to make sure you can actually believe what you just heard (like the note he hits at the end of "A Song for You"). The effortless range and virtuosity of Doc is on full display throughout this CD, and yet there are also many mellow moments, making this an easy CD to listen to all the way through. If you want Doc, then you NEED this CD."
