"This review pertains more to the complete series of 20 2-disc sets of which this is a part.
There are several great compilations out there for those who are looking for an overview of Django's career. Verve's Jazz Masters comp is one I highly recommend.
However, if you're a guitar nerd like I am, and you want to really study the music of Django Reinhardt, this series is the best way hands down. The material is presented in chronological order in the best possible sound quality. The liner notes are entertaining and informative, the photos are excellent and all the session details are here.
Obviously, as the songs were recorded between 1930 and 1953, don't expect sonic marvels. They are sourced from 78's, optical film, wire-recorder, acetate and tape, and the quality varies quite a bit. But, those sources are lovingly transferred, and having heard dozens of vinyl and CD compilations, I can personally state that this is the best quality you'll get.
It's not for the casual fan, but if you're serious about studying the evolution of one of (if not the) greatest guitar-artist of all time this is the place to start."
