Synopsis
Product Description I want to make white man spirituals. I want to give names to the ghosts, as a way of saying we know who you are. I want to explore facets of our lives that are bestial, as well as ones that are angelic. I want to make guesses about who you are. I want to arrive slowly, and leave swiftly. I want to peer through the largest telescope, squint through the most powerful microscope, and see infinity stretch in both directions. I want to somehow recognize our significance in spite of this. I want to stop obsessively searching for truth, and appreciate the ambiguity of living a human life. (Chris Staples) |
CD ReviewsA delightful discovery!!! Nse Ette | Lagos, Nigeria | 04/30/2010 (5 out of 5 stars) "Tracklisting for this album is as follows:
1. Force of a Proper Wind 2. 1979 3. Devil in the Woods 4. When You Were Young 5. Sawdust In My Clothes 6. Interlude 7. A Lock of Samson's Hair 8. Time Is A Bird 9. Brighton Beach 10. Out of the Valley Discover America is not a band, but singer/songwriter Chris Staples, and "Future Paths" is his sophomore effort. With a voice that can best be described as casually stirring, his musical style is breezy and uplifting. Simple, laid back, and highly melodic is opening cut "Force of proper wind", setting the tone for much of the slbum's 10 tracks. More acoustic with a tinge of Rockabilly is "1979", while lead-off single "Devil in the woods" is a hook-laden Indie Rocker, my favourite. "When you were young" is filled with ghostly whistling effects, "Sawdust in my clothes" has a Lo Fi Alt-Country feel, "Interlude" is just that, an acoustic interlude, while the gently bouncy "A lock of Samson's hair" is Indie Rock/Folk. "Time is a bird" is a beautiful retro-sounding ballad awash in slide guitar and lyrics dealing with learning to let go. "Brighton beach" (a tale about a boy drowning in the surf) has angular riffs and lovely harmonies, while closing is the jagged Rocky organ-sprinkled "Out of the valley" with lengthy guitar breaks. A quietly captivating album." |
