"This was supposed to be the big "comeback album" from one of the greatest musicians and vocalists of all time. Instead it got overlooked and underplayed as a "1950's hasbeen trying to get back to his glory" What is wrong with these people? Don't they know what got them there in the first place. I must admit that when I heard that Dion was putting out an album back in 1989 I thought to myself "what's with these 1950's guys? Don't they get it?" So for years I just ingored it. I'd see it in the store and pass it. Then one day I saw his video for "Written on Subway Walls" My jaw dropped. The following week I bought it and listened....and listened....and listened and eventually fell asleep because it was getting late. I couldn't put it down. Wow! Dion still has it. Even 17 years later "Yo Frankie" is still one of my favorites. And this is coming from a 35 year old who wasn't even born when Dion was hitting the charts. For those of you out there listening to Britney, Jessica, Justin or Hip Hop you better wake up and realize where it came from. Get this album and listen to some real music for once. Dion...you still rock!!"

It is always best to take albums on their individual merits. Ignoring who Dion was and who he is now -- we have well-written songs that have a Jersey/NYC feel, in line with Bruce Springsteen's more mainstream stuff (not Nebraska). Good, strong voice - he makes the best of his admittedly limited range. The production threatens to go towards a little too much slickness that detracts from the earnest lyrics of "Written on the Subway Wall", so it flows along in a radio-friendly way, but I remember that this album got very limited airplay. It isn't one of the greatest albums of all time, but it is a album that reveals quite a bit of depth and intelligence -- an unexpected treat."

Incredible Comeback

"Just how incredible Dion sounds on this contemporary comeback is as stunning to me today as it was back in 1990. His glory days in the 50's were before my time so I wasn't expecting much when this first came out. I had heard of Dave Edmunds involvement (whom I was a big fan of at that time) and decided to give it a try. Listening to "Written on the Subway Wall" and "King of the New York Streets" today sound just as amazing as it did back then. The tasty guitar work on "Subway" makes it a truly special recording that in any just world would have been a massive hit. The slick contemporary production combined with strong material and great vocals truly made Dion sound like the next big thing. The updated references to his early roots add a nice autobiographical context to the songs."
