CD Reviews

Choice Saluzzi
Charley B. Forsberg | Chicago, IL United States | 04/05/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"These are all original compositions, played by a trio of bandoneon, accoustic guitar and accoustic bass. Stylistically, this music is a personal and thorough integration of classical, jazz, tango , and indigenous musics.
Lewis Freedman described Bill Evans' playing with the following adjectives:"Concentrated
Searching
Honest
Desperate
Intelligent
Intellectual
Anti-sentmental
Specific
Passionate
Controlled
Lean
Aware
Ironic
Contemporary"(liner notes to Bill Evans Trio with Symphony Orchestra). These apply equally to Dino Saluzzi and his trio. I would also add:Subtle
Intimate
Original
Virtuosic. I want to caution you, though. This music's pleasures are not accessible on first or even fifth hearing if one isn't paying close attention. It sounds like pleasant latin background music with maybe too much squeeze box at first. It was only afer listening many times, then putting it away for several days, and THEN playing it again, that its beauties opened up to me. That's just the way Saluzzi's music is.
I wish to add one more adjective, which is used too often, but in this case actually applies:Spiritual."
HEAR THE TANGO IN HIS SOUL...
Larry L. Looney | Austin, Texas USA | 04/10/2003

"Dino Saluzzi's latest is simply one of the most beautiful recordings I've heard in some time. I've always found his bandoneon playing both magnetic and hypnotic - he weaves a mighty spell. On this recording, he's joined by his son José Maria Saluzzi on acoustic guitar and ECM stalwart Palle Danielsson on double bass. As one would expect on an ECM release, there are no overdubs here - just three stellar musicians completely in tune with each other, laying out beauty for the listener. All of the compositions are originals by Dino - and while none of them are strictly tangos, you can definitely hear the tango in his soul. It's where his roots lie, and its power and beauty infuse everything he's written. The comments by the reviewer below, relating to the need for multiple listenings to get to the heart of the music, are right on the mark. There is great beauty and depth here, warmth and life and joy and aching sadness - all of the things that make up life. Saluzzi is a master - any new recording from him is a joy to experience, and each and every one of them is timeless. Pass this one up at your peril."

"Ancora una volta Saluzzi ha dimostrato la sua delicatezza di grande artista nel generare sonorit? autenticamente poetiche.

In Responsorium c'? tutto: Musica, sogno, poesia, tecnica e, soprattutto, cuore. Buon ascolto."
