"One of the most gifted and original tenorists of his time, Dewey Redman really shows his abilities on this well-rounded set. Splitting his time between straightahead material and his more usual avant-garde leanings, he proves how strong he is in a variety of settings. His "Blues for J.A.M." is a soulful slow blues where he improvises a cliche-free and stunning tenor solo. In contrast, "As One," a duet with pianist Geri Allen, is several minutes of free improvisation that stand as a high water mark of the genre. With fine support from Allen, bassist Cameron Brown, and drummer Eddie Moore, this album is worth searching for."
