CD ReviewsThe Best Musicians of Puerto Rico - Bar none Firebrand | Woonsocket, RI | 08/17/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "This production brought together the BEST of the BEST of the Puerto Rican salsa and latin-jazz scenes, including such notables as Mario Rivera (of Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra), Juancito Torres (Puerto Rico's late top trumpet player), Cachete Maldonado (Puerto Rico's patriarch of the rumba/percussion scene, and visionary of Puerto Rico's revolutionary Batacumbele ensemble), and others. The production is made by Frank Ferrer, a man who has a knack for making productions of all-stars with an eye to producing music for the discerning listener.
Originally, Frank Ferrer had two other groups (Puerto Rico 2010 and Puerto Rico 2013) who were his first forays into all-stars, salsa with fusion with American jazz and funk. He later worked on the revolutionary Batacumbele ensembles and Descarga Boricua is probably the culmination of this quest to reunite the best of Puerto Rico and make salsa for the musician, not the erotic salsa crowd. No true salsero can live without Descarga Boricua (Esta Si Va) and their sequel, "Abrazate A Puerto Rico". The third (Somos Uno) wasn't as good as the first two, but the first two double-cd collections I mentioned are Puerto Rico's best expression of salsa. Don't think twice. GET IT NOW." |
