The greatest work since Handel! such was the enthusiastic response of the critic of the British newspaper The Morning Chronicle to the first English performance of Louis Spohrs (1784- 1859) oratorio Der Fall Babylons: a tribute of unstinting praise whose full import is clear when we consider the esteem in which George Frideric Handel has always been held by the English. The naming of both composers in this context proves the excellent reputation of Louis Spohr. The first ever recording of this great work by artists born in Braunschweig and active in Braunschweig reinforces the influence of a composer who as a citizen was shaped by his native city and carried his art and his humanistic principles out into the world.
