Synopsis

Amazon.com
So Depeche Mode releases a singles compilation featuring only one previously unreleased song ("Only When I Lose Myself") in anticipation of a major tour. Sound suspiciously like a shameless cash-in? Sure. But The Singles, 86-98 needed to be made. This is a worthwhile purchase for casual admirers and completists alike. The two-disc set contains revamped versions of the major singles from 1986 to 1998 and a version of "Little 15" that was first released only in France. The set's "grand finale" is the live recording of "Everything Counts," from the 101 album. Although the original studio version of the "Everything Counts" single appeared on 1984's People Are People, DM fudged the chronology to justify including this astounding live recording on the album (a ploy to psych up concert-ticket buyers?). The live recording highlights the worshipful crowd applauding, cheering, and chant-singing "The grabbing hands / Grab all they can / Everything counts in large amounts" long after the song has ended. Ka-ching! --Beth Bessmer

The Singles 86>98

Of course in a DM greatest hits album you would have Personal Jesus, It's No Good, I Feel You and Never Let Me Down Again, but to hear Walking in My Shoes,

In Your Room, and Enjoy the Silence makes my day.

This is the kind of album that you can play while driving, while walking down the street. while working out, or while cleaning your apartment. Now I mean that in a good way. It puts you in an energetic mood, and sing-songing away while you work is a great way to get things done. In that way, you can think of this as a motivational album, LOL.

I don't think this is for sitting around the house though. There are better albums for contemplation...:)

The "81-84 singles compilation" is also great, and in a similar vein. If you are a fan, this is a great addition to your collection, and hearing hit after hit, back to back really reminds you of how good DM is."

"These guys and the Pet Shop Boys are my two favorite new wave 80's bands and I didn't have many. Metal is more my style but Mode and Pet Shop changed my mind SLIGHTLY. "Personal Jesus" was remixed by Marilyn Manson without changing hardly a thing and it sold..A LOT. If you like Depeche Mode, this is certainly their best collection EVER. One of the few bands in the 80's I listened to other than hard rock/metal. Nuff' said."
