Synopsis
Product DescriptionFrightening, awe-inspiring, and absolutely relentless, Deliverance's self-titled album dropped onto the scene in 1989 with all the finesse of a metallic sledgehammer across the forehead. In 1987, Deliverance had made their presence known in dramatic fashion on the California Metal compilation (a sampler in the vein of Metal Blade's Metal Massacre compilations) with "Attack" being the very first thrash/speed metal song with a strong Christian message to ever be released. Overwhelmed with anticipation, fans lined up for two years trying to buy more of this West Coast speed metal as phenomenal as anything released by Exodus, Death Angel, Metallica, and Anthrax. The long wait ended with the release of 1989's self-titled debut, and fans were not disappointed. Having enlisted the production skills of famed mainstream metal producer Bill Metoyer (Flotsam and Jetsam, Trouble, Fates Warning, DRI, Slayer) the debut exuded all the pure destructive power for which fans could have hoped. Every note is executed with jaw-dropping levels of scientific precision. Jimmy's vocals are both powerful and soaring. The Retroactive reissue is remastered and includes both tracks from the California Metal compilation as bonus tracks.

CD Reviews
Awesome metal music Stuart G. Helm | Maple Park, IL United States | 06/24/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "I love Metallica, Savatage and Manowar, so when I first heard Deliverance's music it fit in perfectly and was very similar in sound, but still unique. They have well thought out lyrics that have meaning. They jam out some sweet heavy metal. You will be left wondering, what-the-heck, why didn't I hear about these guys before? If they would have gone secular (I'm glad they didn't) they would have made it big. But they are crusaders and don't bow down to the almighty dollar." Excellent Lyrical Content BargainHunter | 09/11/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) ""Deliverance", released in 1989 by Intense Records, is one of two albums I own by Deliverance on cassette--the other being "Weapons of Our Warfare" (1990). I really like this album because it is excellent metal with great lyrics to-boot. Here are some examples of the richness of their lyrical content:
VICTORY: Explanation of the price paid by Christ for sin and the victory over sin imparted to believers. (Romans 3:21-26; Hebrews 9:13-14) Calls the listener to determine his or her heart allegiance (Joshua 24:14-15; 1 Kings 18:21; Matthew 6:24).
NO TIME: A person with good intentions, but who never has time for God or loving others because he is focused on himself, ignores the greatest commandments (Matthew 22:34-40) and learns that he is not accepted by God when finally standing before Him (Matthew 7:21-23). Serves as a warning that faith without works in no faith at all (James 2:14-26).
DELIVERANCE: Explanation of what deliverance is about and how the band is instructed by the the Master to "unlock chains and bonds" with the "keys to the Kingdom". (Romans 6:1-14) Also a call to the listener to again examine his or her own heart.
IF YOU WILL: Describes how sin and Satan blind man and calls the listener to search God's Word and seek King Jesus before time runs out (2 Corinthians 6:1-2). Speaks of the truth and power of God's Word (Romans 3:4; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Hebrews 4:12-13) and how Satan seeks to kill (1 Peter 5:8).
AWAKE: A soul in hell pleads with God to return to Earth in order to warn others of his "God forsaken home". God grants his or her wish with limited time. My only gripe with this song is that it seems loosely in contradiction to Jesus' story of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31).
Please note that the descriptions above and Scriptural references are my own and I don't wish to appear as though I am speaking on behalf of Deliverance--these are my own interpretations of the songs. "A Space Called You" and "Attack" are bonus tracks and not on my original cassette, so I can't speak to those. I hope this is helpful to you in making a determination of whether or not to purchase this CD or buy the MP3s." Classic Metal R. Bellomy | Dallas | 01/03/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "Updated artwork and the sound has been cleaned up a bit - a lot better than the cassette I had in 1989, or the demo-tape my friend had from 1987-ish. Deliverance is a great band - I've loved them since I first heard the song "No Time." One of the most talented metal bands that happened to be comprised of Christians."
