"Earth Wind & Fire have released a number of Greatest Hits albums, but this is the only single-disc EWF compilation I could find on Amazon which contained the wonderful 'Fall in Love with Me'. (In the UK, it also turns up on the 'Let's Groove' compilation CD.) It's been over twenty years since I last heard many of these tracks. Remastered, they positively sparkle. But then, after 'September', EWF always did go in for big production numbers. Sometimes Maurice White paid too much attention to the detail of the arrangement and too little to the strength of the underlying song. Take the music of 'That's the Way of the World', for example: superb chorus, good arrangement, great singing, but lousy tune for the verses. Maybe the real problem is that it's as if Maurice White had spent just too much listening to Hall & Oates's ABANDONED LUNCHEONETTE. Twenty years on, even 'September' sounds like a re-working of Andrew Gold's 'What a Lonely Boy'. Were EWF simply reclaiming the music that the white man stole from the black man, and then sanitising it for a largely white audience? EWF represented the marriage of disco, soul and Disney. Of these high-production numbers, my favourites are 'Let's Groove', 'Can't Let Go' and 'Fall in Love with Me'. I just cannot resist (when I'm alone!) trying to sing along with Philip Bailey's falsetto.EWF were never the same once Bailey had left to sing with Phil Collins, who also targeted the white, middle-class record-buyer. But this album is how I will remember them, singing to the heavens, gloriously adorned, and giving the latter half of the 1970s much to be jubilant about."
