"While Runners Four is arguably Deerhoof's most impressive and probably my favorite (at the moment anyway)release. Halfbird's genious seems overlooked, at least by the other reviewer. Are we so conditioned that we consciously reject recorded music that wasn't produced in a state-of-the-art studio with constant overdubs? This album was supposedly recorded on a four track cassette recorder. This may be a sonic turn off to some but it actually creates a dreamy, unsettling world that could only be narrated by Satomi (check out the creepy/beautiful track Queen Orca Wicca Wind). These sounds could never have been attained using the crystal clear recording methods so frequently utilized in the music industry today. Halfbird is the marriage of Deerhoof's honed sense of melody and their urge to create jarring noise. Listen to Red Dragon and tell me if you've heard a prettier song...Listen to Trickybird and tell me you don't want to bang your head like you're 16 years old again. Basically we should all be open to mistakes and grittyness of life and incorporated into our artistic tastes. Just open your minds like a flower in the morning and it will only hurt a little."
