Winner of the 2002 Great American Jazz Piano Competition and a past guest on Marian McPartland s Piano Jazz, pianist/composer/vocalist Deanna Witkowski has been heralded for her consistently thrilling playing and her boundless imagination (All Music Guide). Her fourth release, From This Place, finds the disciplined paths of living as a jazz musician and as a person of faith converging in a beautiful, genre-defying artistic statement. Not since Mary Lou Williams has there been a pianist who has melded jazz and liturgy into such joyous, accessible music that will appeal across generational, stylistic, and religious divides. with Donny McCaslin, tenor and soprano sax; John Patitucci, acoustic and electric bass; Scott Latzky, drums; and guest vocalists Laila Biali, Peter Eldridge, and Kate McGarry

NEW MUSIC BUT TRADITIONAL LANGUAGE
J. C. Weaver | 04/14/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Mixing of Jazz with the Mass is nothing new, although this CD is of impressive quality. Yet, do not expect anything new liturgically when it comes to language. One would expect that the language would also be refreshing and impressive. Yet, if language is not a barrier to you, enjoy a great jazz Mass."
The Good. The Jazz. The Liturgical.
Lover of Music | 04/08/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Her latest effort, a CD entitled "From This Place," is a journey into the rarely traveled genre of sacred liturgical jazz. Marrying what some might consider the sacred and the profane, Deanna, guided by the love and rhythms of the Holy Spirit, reveals the spirituality of jazz and unites it with her longstanding Christian sensibility and spirituality. "From This Place" effortlessly travels the distance between quiet meditation and resounding praise, rest and action, the individual and the universal. Each piece is ours to share and to be inspired by, and they are also her prayer."
