"A lot of DB fans didn't like this album -- a huge departure from the band's early stuff -- but "Whatever You Say, Say Nothing" is just brilliant, particularly "Bethlehem's Gate." This song alone should put frontman Ricky Ross among the pantheon of rock's greatest songwriters (Springsteen, Young, Dylan, Browne, et al). And "Fall So Freely Down" -- how many rockers have written an edgy but stirringly beautiful song about childbirth? Don't get me wrong: I loved the first albums -- "Raintown" and "Fellow Hoodlums" especially. But there's something about this album that just slaps the soul silly with raw beauty."
