Jaw-dropping skill meets terrifying musical ability

"David Taylor is known as one of the best bass trombonists out there, and this CD definitely confirms that. But what this CD also reflects is the immense musical skill that Mr. Taylor possesses, as well. Starting off with the Rzewski piece, Taylor creates a musical image that sets the mood for the rest of the album. Following the sinewy, flowing music of "Moonrise of Memories" is the Dave Liebman piece "Remembrances," a jazzy, constantly shifting bit of music. This is in turn followed by Eric Ewazen's "Dagon II," although this piece is far from the Ewazen you know and love. This work is filled with snarling, angry loops of Taylor's bass bone, and is a nice bit of electronic/organic music. The final piece "Duende Quidditas" is a fairly dynamic bit of what sounds like improvised music. This is not "easy" music by any stretch of the imagination, so some might be turned off by this recording. However, if you're looking for great music played by an even better musician, this is the CD for you. Besides that, though, this is a must have for any brass or wind player out there, (although it might make you feel a little less confident in your own ability!)"
