Synopsis

The Texas-born tones of alto saxophonist and flutist David "Fathead" Newman are familiar to millions of Ray Charles fans worldwide, thanks to his stint with Charles in the '60s. He's also enjoyed a sterling career as a jazzman, and this CD teams Newman with trombonist Steve Turre, pianist John Hicks, bassist Steve Novosel, percussionist Steve Kroon, and Winard Harper. Mr. Newman has a big and cultured sound that is never far away from the blues, as evidenced by the title track and the swinging waltzes "Willow Weep for Me" and "Life." Newman gives a shout-out on flute to Eddie Harris's Latin-tinged hit "Listen Here" on "Cousin Esau," and "Mellow-D for Mr. C" highlights his R&B roots. David "Fathead" Newman plays all moods and grooves with a daring improvisational style and with a dynamic dancing feel. --Eugene Holley Jr.
