Synopsis

Mix creators are always best judged by their ease with shift and overdrive, and on this double-disc effort, Dave Ralph officially confirms his metamorphosis from a Toyota MR2 to a sleek and sophisticated Porsche. Slipping effortlessly through the likes of Laurent Garnier and Oliver Klein, Ralph moves his brand of trance like a driver in one of those sleek four-wheeled beauties on a coastal highway. Naturalized is an airy compilation designed to transport listeners to a world where rivers flow, hills roll, and mountains climb. Even Ralph's own tribal trance intro, "Islands of Light," invokes a sense of serenity; it's a mature and comfortable introduction to the progressive energies that lie within. Indeed, Piece Process wastes no time with the hypnotic, techno-tinged "My Mind Is Going (Original Mix)," while Indart, Wally, and Kucho put heads even further above the clouds with the aptly named "The Devil." The shuddering backbeat that holds up the melancholic "Ozone" from Planisphere is joyous stuff, while Fatboy Slim's fun, sweaty ass-shaker "Star 69" folds perfectly into Garnier's dramatic, sax-tinged "The Man with the Red Face." By the last two cuts, Fragma's "You Are Alive" and Junkie XL's "Sinycho", Ralph's mix peaks. The record's only flaw is that it leaves the listener begging for a third disc. --Steffan Chirazi

CD Reviews

Unspectacular, but solid and worthwhile
Douglas A. Greenberg | Berkeley, CA USA | 11/03/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Like it or not, Dave Ralph seems to have developed a definite and identifiable style of sequencing and mixing progressive house and trance tunes. As some reviewers have commented, there is no real build-up, no climax, no frenzy. Love it or leave it, that's Ralph's style; a bit laid-back and languorous in its pacing and overall feel (though this was not so much the case in his "Love Parade" mix). This is actually ok with me, as variety is indeed the spice of life and I find that his selection of tracks is for the most part, first-rate. Contributing to the apparent lack of real "punch" in parts of the mix is the fact that the volume level for the sound reproduction here is noticeably low; I have had to turn the volume dial on my cd player up near full-blast to really bring out the music and its full impact.I recommend this mix for those who enjoy a progressive sound that is shaded more toward trance than house.
I would add that since this is a 2 cd set just chock full of relatively unplayed tunes (and a few fresh remixes), it's a bargain and certainly worth picking up for fans of Digweed, Sasha, Seaman, Graham and the like."
Where are we going here?

"I bought this compilation in hopes that it might be on par with Max Grahm's latest on the Kinetic Label. The label is unfortunately, fairly inconsistent in terms of quality. Where max builds progressive house into a breakbeat frenzy, in which his own productions define the mixes. This mix doesn't go anywher, no climax, A very slooow buildup indeed. It's more of the same he put out with transport 2. Recycled tunes, the best of which are too slow. Buy Jame's Holdin's Fear of a Silver Planet if you want the latest in progressive mixes. Nice Packaging."
