The Often Overlooked Bach

"A wonderful performance and collection of the Keyboard Sonatas of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. A brief listen continues the style of the Baroque period so well exemplified by Johann Sebastian and other composers of the era of J.S. Bach. A more attentive listening details the use of sudden stops and silences exemplifying what the Classical period of composition would bring to the world of music. CPE Bach shows one foot comfortably and expertly in each period of music."
Danny Driver on CPE Bach

"This particular son of Bach is sometimes noted for being eccentric to the point of being "off-putting," as the British would say. The new Hyperion recording with Danny Driver was an eye-opener. To be honest, CPE has never impressed me overly, even in Mikhail Pletnev's recording several years ago. This recording is different! Driver has already made a reputation for himself with his playing of the unjustly overlooked English composer York Bowen, and he is equally good in this unusual music. He has the "feel" for it, combining personal involvement with fine playing. This disc should be included in GRAMOPHONE's best solo discs for 2010. The Hyperion recording, not surprisingly, is superb--clear and very realistic. A winner, on all counts! It makes one want to reconsider one's views on CPE Bach."
