CD Reviews

If it sounded better

(3 out of 5 stars)

"To have back in the market the Lyrita label (and at a reasonable price!) is one of the best things that could happen to collectors. Some of these recordings are so good they belie their age. But not this one. Since under the copyright of this release I see EMI, I would blame it on them. During the 60's and 70's, while Decca/London was recording with incredible sound, EMI/Angel insisted in cutting the bass and blending everything. A pity, since some great performances would have sounded much better. Total lack of vision, sadly.

The music in this CD is good and justifies more hearings, but I am sure it is better than what it sounds here. The performances are not great either. The good news is that this proves how much orchestras, ensembles and choirs have improved in the last 30 years. Perhaps a great label like Chandos might take the Daniel Jones case under their wing. It would be worthwhile."
