Synopsis

Album Description
Percussionist Damon Short and reedist Paul Scea have combined musical forces to create an improvised soundscape with wide-ranging textures, instrumentation and concepts. These two musicians create their sounds, within a stream of consciousness approach for today's discerning audience of free jazz and new music. "Balance of Power" unfolds with so many varied instrumentations, it's hard to imagine this is a duo recording when reading the booklet credits for each track, which include flute, voice, percussion, vibes, bass clarinet, soprano sax, piano strings, tenor sax, bass trumpet, drums, bowed cymbals, wood flute, piano and bowed vibraphone. The element of cohesion is the communication and concept of two musicians, Damon Short and Paul Scea. They are not strangers to recording or performing together, and "Balance of Power" is a stunning example of their musical journey. Engineer David Baker suggests in his liner notes, "This is not background music. This music is for a special occasion. Please have one!" Band Members: Paul Scea, flutes, bass clarinet, soprano and tenor sax, piano strings, voice; Damon Short, vibes, drums, cymbals, percussion, piano, voice; Ryan Schultz, bass trumpet (5,13).

CD Reviews

Great duo music
Andre Caporaso | Winnetka, Ca United States | 06/09/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a great CD! Damon Short and Paul Scea play a series of duet improvisations that explore many intriguing textures and moods. They are masters of the many instruments they play, but you won't hear any cliches or showy chops here. This is serious no nonsense music, that's very satisfying to listen to."
