Breathtaking

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I believe this is the same Analogue Productions remastering that I have on a domestically produced CD. The remastering was done using tube technology, and was done by Doug Sax, best known for his work with the audiophile label Sheffield Lab. I have this album on LP, too, and I think this CD is a noticeable improvement. This recording has long been one of the highlights of the Vox catalog. Donald Johanos is a greatly underrated conductor. I have heard him twice in concert, once in the '70's with the Pittsburgh Symphony Chamber Orchestra, and again in the '90's, when he conducted the N.J. Symphony in these Symphonic Dances. The sound on this CD is somewhat dry but splendidly detailed, with much warmth in the different orchestral choirs. As a performance, these Symphonic Dances are unsurpassed. Johanos brings out detail after detail that seem to elude other conductors. The brass in particular are rich but not blaring. The performance of Vocalise is a little understated but marvelously played. The only complaint I can imagine about this CD is that the Dallas Symphony, as recorded at this time, lacked the weight and sonority of some other orchestras that have recorded this music. But if you can accept that caveat, this disc will provide ample rewards."
