Synopsis

Album Description
DJ Spinna's addition to the Beat Generation series seems almost obvious. His diverse resume exemplifies BBE Records assignment to give the best producers the freedom to make quality music without the distractions imposed by the traditional A&R paradigm. Here To There is an all-encompassing Soul record, but undeniably Hip Hop throughout. Its sophistication is a nod to the days when Hip Hop, House, Disco, Funk and Electro were one in the same, but is also unapologetically contemporary. Here To There unfolds like the journey its name suggests. From the omnipotent groove of the 'Intro' to the contagious baseline and vocoder hook of the first single 'Drive', the turntablism of Rock (Unplugged), Apani B Fly and Jean Grae's intelligent and acutely paced flow on Dash, the jazz syncopation and fluidity of Vinija Mojica's vocals on Idols, Here To There fills a noticeable void in the market.

CD Reviews

3.5 - Works well on the RnB tip anyway
7th Angl | Ontario, Canada | 09/10/2003
(3 out of 5 stars)

"The amount of production emanating from this man in any given year is extraorinary. On this LP, Spinna amasses both hip hop and rnb artists with a sprinkling of jazz talents. The result is predictably mixed. A sure shot banger, Jean Grae paired with Apani B Fly is sadly mired in a mediocre beat. The same can be said for the Jigmastas' track. "Tune You Out" f/ Rise is tolerable, but the bottom line is that these tracks pale to the much more funkier rnb songs. "Idols" w/ the sultry Vinia Mojica works splendidly (if BBE were only sage enough to sign her on as the label's preeminent female vocalist). Likewise for the tracks with Soullive, Angela Johnson and Shaun Escoffery. These handful of songs are a testament to what production Spinna is capable of and mesh well. Despite the hour plus duration of "Here to There", I was expecting more quality hip hop tracks, which Spinna is normally adept at crafting."
