CD ReviewsWhat a sense of nostalgia (aka: these circuit sounds are SO Daniel W. Kelly | Long Island, NY United States | 04/29/2010 (2 out of 5 stars) "10 years ago, I would have given this disc rave reviews for featuring artists and remixers like Vernessa Mitchell, Ralph Falcon, Beyonce, Solange, DJ Escape, Peter Rauhofer, Ralphi Rosario, and Tony Moran. But listening to it now, all I can think is, if they wait a couple of years and continue to pump out new songs with this decade old circuit sound, they'll finally be back in style again as we enter the 20 year retro-90s craze.
Granted, I'm thrilled to have a good 6 minutes of the exclusive Escape mix of Beyonce and GaGa's duet version of Beyonce's Video Phone, and to find a mix of the Billboard #1 Club track by Solange on CD (since it's not available on CD anywhere else), but along with that, you have Vernessa Mitchell sounding just like she did 15 years ago at Junior's Sound Factory, singing about rising, joy and being lifted up and all that good inspirational stuff, Ralph Falcon filler remixed in true repetitive Rauhofer tribal fashion, and even Tony Moran sounding bored with his classic, once thrilling circuit sounds in the lackluster track sung by American Idol cast-off Frenchie Davis. All these once hot hot hot dance icons sound like pale imitations of themselves, and it's a shame. Anjulie sings the circuit vocal track Rain like she's bored, Electrified is mostly non-vocal droning tribal, Get Into It captures the thumping spirit of classic b*tch tracks pretty well, Stacy Burkett's track is mostly non-vocal, Underneath my Skin is a strong, pumpin hardhouse track, Balearic is yawn inducing tribal filler, Wait So Long is a semi-vocal track that offers promise that it never fully delivers, and finally, Let Me See Your Underwear is a typical sexrated novelty that makes you think...wait, is this supposed to be a play on the Club 69 classic Let me BE your underwear? Of course, if you are really still hopelessly devoted to this genre of club music, then you may very well love this CD. But honestly, as a fan of the genre when it was at its peak, I can say that this mix is anything but peak hour pleasure. Personally, I would have preferred if they had cut out about 6 of the less interesting tracks and just given us longer lengths of the more appealing vocal tracks, especially since most of them are not available on CD.
