CD Reviews

A must have for musiclovers
robha | Europe | 07/25/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This cd is full off great heavy rock-songs with melody, feeling, great lyrics and passion. One of the best from a great band with an even greater singer. In a world with Green Day and Foo Fighters it's a shame D-A-D isn't bigger because they are better."
Finally, the followup to Riskin' It All has arrived

"Strong words to any real fan of this band, I know. But it's true. It would seem that Jesper and company took the well-deserved criticism of 'Soft Dogs' to heart, because they have returned with hard rock the likes of which we have not heard from them in over a decade.

I almost didn't check this record out, I was so jaded from the 'Soft Dogs' debacle. But I am glad I did. The music on this disc is outstanding, and even makes 'Everything Glows' pale by comparison. It's better than that one, better than Simpatico, better and more accessible even than Helpyourselfish.

It truly ranks right up there with 'No Fuel..' and 'Riskin..'.

If you like this band, you should not hesitate another moment--buy this cd and rejoice in D.A.D.'s very triumphant return. Cheers to the D.A.D. band, for making this excellent record --and thanks!!! Some of us have waited a long, long time for this one.

Got a spare spark plug?

(4 out of 5 stars)

"When you start getting a decent body of reviews onto Amazon it's hard to sometimes spearate the three and four start releases. You want to give something four stars but have to admit to yourself that it's really no better than something you gave only three stars to just the other week (in my personal case, Shark Islands 'Law of the Order'). And it's albums like this that really bring that catch 22 into sharp focus. Having been along for the ride with these Danish hard rockers since the late 80's I have a certain loyalty to them which they've rarely trampled on. But it must be said that Simpatico tried my patience somewhat and Soft Dogs is... well go read the reviews.

All of which made me think long and hard as to whether this was a three or four. My reasons for eventually awarding the four star mark are as follows.

Scare Yourself sounds like DAD, it's not a departure from their signature sound and as such at least means that the long time fan knows what they are getting - if they even know this album has been released. I mean the last few DAD albums have been released to zero press whatsoever which is perhaps weird given they were one of the most successful 80's rawk bands from Scandinavia and with the huge groundswell of rawk bands from that part of the world during the 00's you'd think DAD would at least rate a passing mention?

Further, the band have kept their sense of humour though in this case there is probably more serious hard rockin' going on as opposed to endless silliness. And when it's used it is used most often in the context of a good hard rock song (Lawrence of Suburbia being a case in point). As well the bands penchant for introspective mellow ditties has been kept on a tight leash here though they are here (Camping in Scandinavia).

Additionally I have to give extra respect for the band as they've produced their own album - though you'd like to think they know what they're doing by now. My version was supposedly the 'international version' with a bonus track by the name of You Filled My Head which isn't earth shattering but if you can get the version with the bonus track for the same price then why not?

Overall this is a DAD where the professionalism is to the fore and appreciated. It is now a band that admittedly at this stage of the game has no bright future to look forward to or dream of but who, almost on auto pilot, can put otu an album of good quality hard tock with full bodied guitars and raspy vocals yet lacks a certain youthful fire. The engine is in good order, the bodywork is OK, but the spark plugs could use replacing."
