CD Reviews

Some of the best anime music on a four disk set!
Shelly Anne Smith | 06/25/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Cowboy BeBop is one of the best anime titles out there, and one of my favorites. I was so happy when I first heard of this set! I know that this is a little pricey, but it's well worth your money. If you've never seen Cowboy BeBop, you still might like this collection, but you'd appreciate it more if you've seen it. This is four disks, and it has a 88 page book. The text is mainly in Japanese (some stuff in in English), but it has plenty of pictures!

Jazzy Noir Sci-Fi
James Rutkowski | Bridgeview, IL. United States | 03/31/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A true original in animation as well as sci-fi. A great deal of the effectiveness of Bebop is due to the tremendous jazz, pop and blues score of Yoko Kanno. All the best tracks from the previous soundtrack releases are here as well a lot of material that has never been available before. A must have for any Bebop fan. Well worth the price. Which leads me to mention a previous review here by Paul Tremonti. Be very careful where you purchase anime soundtracks. The sight he mentions is selling this box set for a suspiciously reduced price. the reason being is that it is a bootleg. The way to tell is look for the company name on the product. If it says Son May it is a Korean bootleg and the quality of the cd as well as the packaging will be inferior. This is true of all anime cd's. So be careful, and remember just because it may be cheaper doesn't mean it's better."
Great music, one of the best soundtrack album(s) ever
J. Holt | Seattle, WA USA | 12/25/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"There are two kind of soundtrack albums for me. First, more of a score thing -- James Bond, loungy stuff that all bleeds into one, Howard Shore's Lord of Rings stuff is like that too -- good -- kinda lets you melt into a mood. The second is best exemplified by Cowboy Bebop. This is a great, great ecletic collection of music inspired by all of the best music. Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts are INCREDIBLE -- you hear blues, jazz (jazzy jazz), rock (think: 80s rock), some Vangelis new agey stuff (not much here though thankfully). And, each song (there are a lot of songs on each CD, about 15 or so) are broken by VERY SHORT spoken dialog from the movies.Tarrantino's CDs do this too, but they aren't nearly as good. The dialog often takes up too much time and you get bored waiting for the 2 minute speech to end -- by that time, you're thinking "What am I listening to? Need to change the disc." NOT SO HERE. Each little pulse of Japanese snippet (really funny stuff too) is just enough to parse the flow to allow the musicians to swing into a new music style. You jump and bop into new moods with very little turbulence.Stuff that I thought I'd hate that I like -- there's a singer on this album that sounds like a cross between Richard Marx (the Devil) and Jon Bon Jovi -- nevertheless, those songs are good too. It's like a friend of mine said about Japan once, "Those guys are still doing 80s hair rock and we have to put up with all this alternative crap." He's so right -- and here, you get a sense of what 80s rock could have been if we didn't screw it up with Mtv and hair. The disc I got is the 4 disc set -- the last disc is a "live" album with some experimental re-takes of other score pieces. It's good, straight music. Makes you want to catch the Seatbelts live.Hey, maybe I'll get around to watching the animated series someday!"
