Synopsis

Product Description
Cousin Emmy was a fascinating and enigmatic entertainer from the golden age of early country radio; flamboyant, colorful & sassy (billing herself as 'the first hillbilly star to own a Cadillac'), yet 'down home' & sincere. She wrote one of the great bluegrass classics of all-time, Ruby (Are You Mad At Your Man)? & influenced many performers, like Grandpa Jones. She danced & sang her way into the hearts of everyone who ever saw or heard her perform. In her heyday, she was one of the best-known & most popular country performers with a career that spanned from the mid-1930s into the 1970s, including an appearance at the Newport Folk Festival, at the Smithsonian & as well at the Hollywood Bowl. She also was part of the 1966 European tour The American Folk & Country Festival. She starred on Pete Seeger's TV show and was far more popular than her few albums might suggest. Includes many rare recordings and radio shows plus a 52 page detailed booklet.

CD Reviews

The Best Reissue I've Heard in Years
M. Brown | Pennsylvania | 04/24/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Kudos to Jim Nelson and Mike Seeger for compiling such a beautiful musical portrait of this talented and charismatic performer. They are responsible for producing this reissue, and did a wonderful job with the notes and the selection of music. I cannot recommend this strongly enough to fans of country music, old-time string band music, the song "Ruby" (which she wrote), and classic radio.

This is recording is easy on the ears, both in terms of fidelity and musical quality. Top notch!!!
