Very Good Compilation

"The price is right and the music impeccable. I bought this because it contains 13 (or 14?) of the classic Decca tracks from the late 1930s, hoping they would sound better than on the 1996 Decca CDs (e. g. Best of Early Basie). They do sound better--not dramatically so, but any improvement in these cuts seems worth seeking, especially at this price. There is some noticeable improvement in clarity. I was also pleased with the earliest songs (early 1930s) of the small group. Some good later 1939 stuff fills out the disk, although I've heard some of these tracks in better sound (on the 4-CD Columbia box set, I think). Surely someday the classic Decca tunes will be re-mastered better, but in the meantime, this isn't a bad way to go."
