What's on this disc are some of the excellent big band sides from the band in the early 40's, with wonderful solo work by Buddy Tate and others. Basie also recorded with smaller groups, and some of those sides are here --one group included Don Byas and Buck Clayton, and another Clark Terry and Wardell Gray made during a time when Basie laid down the big band. Interesting music, not always compelling, but worth buying for sure."
