James F. (JimF) from MIDLAND, MI Reviewed on 8/11/2009...
When I had XM satellite radio in my car and used to listen to the jazz stations, I always loved it when anything by Count Basic came on. This compilation gives the listener everything that you would want by this group. Listen in and enjoy.

Why must it have a label ?

"I love Count Basic and I love this CD.
I was amused by Travis Miller's review. It doesn't really matter to me how this music is labeled, just that it's good, drivin' acid/smooth/funk jazz.
At the risk of sounding like someone who would label, however, Travis, how proud you must be to be such a snob.
Cheap California Chardonnay isn't always a bad thing. You seem to be really hung up on labels. Too bad.

"I play in the jazz band at my middle school, and I just bought this fabulous CD by Count Basic! Until I ran across him, I didn't know who they were, although I've heard M.L. in the Sunshine well over a thousand times. Now I'm hooked on them, and I now have their CD on Autorepeat. Who thought that smooth jazz could ever sound this good. The album is just great everytime you play it. Every smooth-jazz aficionado should have this!"
Basic-ally... It's Okay, I Guess...

"I've never owned a Count Basic album, so I didn't know what to expect. I did know that both him and Gota are on the same label (Instict) and both are on an acid jazz tip. Since I like Gota, I figured I'd like Count Basic too, and I do. However, there's just one problem... the vocal songs are kinda hard to stomach. The person who sings lead vocals is like a 3rd-rate N'Dea Davenport or Siedah Garrett. That's the same problem I had with Gota's vocal songs. The lead singer sounds like a really bad Dionne Warwick... I do have to give her kudos for the remake of "License To Kill". I had heard that song a long time ago on a James Bond soundtrack and liked it. The only thing I hate about it is how abruptly it ended. Bad production error, I assume. Out of the 5 vocal tracks, all of of them are decent, but not great. Now, as far as the instrumentals go, Count is the man. "Wes Who?" grabbed me before I even knew who the artist was, and I definately didn't know Count made "M.L. In The Sunshine" when I first heard that song as well. The remake of Maze's "Joy & Pain" is excellent and "Chasing The Sunset" is very cool. And an honarable mention to "On The Move". So all in all, Count is good... but he could be better if he would just restrain from the vocal tracks."
