Amazon.comWith their fourth release, Cordero have coalesced into a unique and bracing quartet. Essentially a spunky guitar-bass-drums trio with the addition of a trumpet player, they're fronted by singer and songwriter Ani Cordero. Her vocals, in Spanish or English, move easily between emphatic low register sensuality and soaring pleas, pronouncements and warnings. Latin rhythms and melodies have been melded to the angular wallop of bands like Gang of Four and Pere Ubu (whose bass player, Tony Maimone, produced this set) for some truly furious moments. The songs are tinged with longing, with lyrics like "I've got your heart in me, don't let the sun go down with you so far from home" sailing out of the propulsive grooves. And when Omar Little lets loose with his clear-tones trumpet lines and trills, it evokes a sunset in the Mexican desert. --David Greenberger
