The Haydn and Hummel played on an authentic keyed trumpet

"This is a genuine must-have for all serious trumpet players. There are dozens of fine recordings of the Haydn and Hummel concertos played on the modern trumpet, but it's quite a revelation to hear them performed on the instrument for which they were originally composed. Reinhold Friedrich does a masterful job of taming the old keyed trumpet. He makes it sing and bark with remarkable ease and sensitive artistry. The rich, deep tone of the keyed trumpet (which is much larger than the modern Eb trumpet) is a joy to hear. Friedrich's cadenza in the Haydn is a tasteful tour de force and his tempi in the Hummel (finally a finale that doesn't race to the finish line in a breathless panic!) are refreshingly original. The orchestra does a fine job, too, especially the woodwind soloists. Best of all, its low price makes this CD an incredible bargain and a great gift for your favorite trumpet player."
Provisional Acclaim!

"You can't hear 'em all, it's true, but I should have known about this recording of Haydn's "Keyed Trumpet" Concerto played on an authentic keyed trumpet. I've just reviewed a very fine performance of the same work on modern valved trumpet, by Niklas Eklund, in which I kvetched about the absence of a performance on a historical instrument. I was mistaken. Mea maxima culpa!
I'm ordering this CD "on the double". I'll replace this provisional and irrelevant rating/review as soon as possible."
