Harry James and the Capitol Recordings
R. Viehdorfer | Arvada CO | 01/03/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)
"I'm limiting myself to the Harry James recordings in this set; I'm still digesting the Krupa sides and they deserve a separate review, in my opinion.
These Capitol recordings of Harry James are a unique chronological history of the trumpeters' efforts after leaving Columbia, and show a fresh interest in making good music again. Other than a couple of depressing novelty-style recordings, a forerunner of the cover games played by labels and jazz artists through the 60's and 70's, the charts show clear modern jazz influence. Of note to this reviewer are the recordings made for a unique Capitol set entitled Dance to the Bands, featuring all of the name bands (Herman, Kenton, Anthony, et al) under the Capitol roster at the time; titles include Smogbound and a stellar, almost definitive version of the now classic big band chart April In Paris. More importantly, the set includes the complete and previously unavailable Wild About Harry album, recorded in 1957 and featuring Willie Smith and Buddy Rich, the gem of the set, in my opinion. Check out Barn 12 and Blues on a Count; all of these charts are stellar. The other dates, which included albums such as The New James and The Complete Harry James in Hi-Fi, are presented as recorded, and in order. This is a marvelous gift for any Harry James fan, and I can't recommend them any more highly. Harry's horn, as always, shines bright. Many of these recordings, as well as the band, rival anything Herman, Basie, or Ellington were making; check out James' version of the Ernie Wilkins chart Fair And Warmer, for example. Highly Recommended!"
