Synopsis

Product Description
Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen were one of the great Roots music groups of the late 1960 s and 1970 s. They laid the groundwork for what would come to be known as the Americana genre. The Airmen did it all, boogie woogie, country and western, blues, swing and classic Rock n Roll. The group moved to San Francisco in the summer of 1969 and was almost immediately established as a force to be reckoned with. They regularly played the Fillmore West and Family Dog as well as many other venues and outdoor shows. By late 1970 they attracted the attention of several record companies and signed with ABC subsidiary Paramount Records in 1971. Their debut album called Lost In The Ozone (featuring cover art by Frayne) was brimming over with great songs and one Hot Rod Lincoln hit number 9 in the pop charts the following year. This 2CD set goes right back to the beginning and shows us how the Airmen came together and includes rare early jam sessions and classic live performances.

CD Reviews

Excellent--good to see rarities finally officially released
Earl Jones | DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS | 01/26/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As a long-time fan of CCLPA, I was very excited to see an official release of older material. This two - disc set is excellent, wonderful packaging, nice liner notes, entertaining photos, etc. This album shines light on the band in their formative years, providing insight as to what they evolved from. Both discs are excellent. The first disc is very early recording sessions, taken from old tapes. The sound quality has been cleaned up as much as possible, and is very listenable, however, if you are looking for crystal clear sound, you won't find it in these types of recordings. Age and other factors take their toll on things like this, however, it is still quite good, just keep in mind that these are recordings that are nearly 40 years old. Definately worth listening to.

Disc two, has wonderful sound quality, start to finish. The music is excellent, and the band definately sounds a little more polished and established. The tracks offered here are wonderful, including a very nice cover of "First I Look At The Purse" which, I would think very few people heard since it was originally recorded.

If you are a casual fan, or unaware of what CCLPA was all about, this disc is still worth picking up, however, you might want to combine this with one of the band's other releases, to get a better grasp on the bigger picture of what the band was really all about.

Special thanks to Billy C. Farlow, and everyone else involved, for helping to make this release possible."
Good stuff, bad recordings

"You really have to be a completist, devoted fan to enjoy this set. I can't put up with the sound quality like another reviewer was able to. Lots of tinny sound and static--a few good songs but I can't handle 2 hours of this. I love all the other recordings by this group, but not this. Sorry.

"I'm the West Virginia Creeper so I can't legitimately review my own work, so I'll just pass. I was right in the middle of this melee and can attest to the veracity of its impossibility."
