CD ReviewsI Love Volume One.....Where's Volume Two? Andrew Stevenson | Union Springs, New York | 08/23/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "I first bought this music back in the early 1960s as an LP on the old Crown label; it cost me all of 99 cents. I was quite happy when it was finally released on CD. I don't know why I love it so much. Hawkins doesn't play any better here than he did on so many other recordings. Maybe it's because the tunes perfectly fit his smoky tenor sax sound; there's an after-hours feel throughout the session. Maybe it's because it reminds me what a fine trumpeter Thad Jones was. Maybe it's because it's a chance to hear Eddie Costa (he died young in a car accident) play both piano and vibes (he's good on both.) Maybe it's because the big-toned bassist George Duvivier is such a presence. I don't know.....it just speaks to me the way some music just does. What drives me nuts is that my copy of the CD states that it is Volume One. Whatever happened to Volume Two? I've never been able to find it. Come to think of it Volume One is not all that easy to find either. If you find it at a decent price, buy it!" Here's Where Volume Two Is Peter K. Hittle | Sioux City, Iowa USA | 05/18/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "Volume two of "The Hawk Swings" was recorded on the UNITED RECORDS label (#7707) I have both volumes on vinyl. The album cover photo's look as if they were taken seconds apart. Hawk is wearing identical clothing on both. Why the different label??? Only the musicians know I guess. Volume two has the same lineup...Costa, Duvivier, Osie Johnson and Thad Jones...although their names are NOT listed on Volume Two....Songs include Bean In Orbit, After Midnight, Hassle, Moodsville, and Stalking. I don't know if Volume Two is still available."
