Take the Coltrane to Rio

(4 out of 5 stars)
"A samba/bossa spin on (mostly) standards, this Brazilian quintet keeps it laid-back and beautiful through a well-focused set that's completely relaxed but never sluggish. This is, to be sure, very old-school stuff--the record doesn't break any new ground or make any demands on the listener. Rather, it's strictly about liquid lyricism, and Roditi's buttery trumpet is just about perfect in this context. There are no slackers in the group, and Pascoal Meirelles' drumming is of particular note. Great recording quality too, all the players are balanced just right. Highly recommended for summer sound soaking. Add a star if you've got a Brazilian jazz addiction."
