Back in 1973, when Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown couldn't get a record deal in the U.S., the French label Black & Blue put the multi-instrumentalist together with American jazz stars like Jay McShann, Al Grey, and Milt Buckner. The resulting recording sessions effectively blurred the line between blues and jazz with swinging rhythms, classy solos, and a sassy attitude. Nine songs from that session were finally released in the U.S. on 1985's Pressure Cooker. Another 10 tracks appear on Just Got Lucky, which also includes four songs from a 1977 Black & Blue session. It's all a perfect blend of hot playing and relaxed fun. --Geoffrey Himes
