CD Reviews

Extraordinary

"The Godfathers of Goth electro have released a European-only E.P. And the seven songs (three remixes of "Weak in My Knees", two remixes of "Michelle", and an ominously wonderful song, "Calling You Out") won't disappoint any of their fans and any fan really of EBM and dark electro. The first mix of "Weak in My Knees" is the best and illustrates just how state-of-the-art Xymox's sound is and has been since their return to form in the latter '90s. This Dutch band ripped apart the electro scene on the 4AD label with the release of the seminal album Clan of Xymox and still sound as vital as ever. The two mixes of the song, "Michelle" ( original on the Medusa album) are extraordinary contrasts in just what this band is capable of. The first remix is a melancholy atmospheric industrial lament to a lover, while the second re recorded version , with the acoustic guitars driving the riff, show Xymox can hold their own . Hopefully this E.P. Is a prelude to a full-blown album coming out soon."
A real gem

"`Weak in My Knees' is a typical Clan of Xymox track that goes further where the previous album left off, combining in their own style dark electro with gothic elements. Ronny's dark voice works sublime with this track only to go in higher regions at the near end of the song. The single-track definitely is made to work on the dance floor, just as they have done so in the past with successful releases as A Day , Jasmine & Rose , There's No Tomorrow - just to name a few - this track will be a guaranteed club stomper.. Also the extra track `Calling You Out' is a real gem , atmospheric synths combined with a Brendan Perry esc type of approach of vocal lines, later in the song we are taken into a more goth rock , ish , and I say ish , type of feeling . Also this track could have been a lead track and will certainly be played as often I think.. Thrilling, emotional and typically Xymox. Can't get enough of that. A remake of the classic `Michelle' is actually the same as the early version with maybe a slight difference on the intro . The remix of Destroid is certainly one of the best remixes I have heard of Clan Of Xymox , Daniel Meyer changes the track into a very dark industrial type of track and I was surprised how good this song could sound with this approach. Last Friday this was spinned during a DJ set and the floor went mental.. the other remixes are what we could expect from remixes , a different approach each time according to the re-mixers own style , which is Electro , of course every single release has remixes so here we have some very good ones too . Personally I cannot make up my mind which one is better , the Azoic remix , Dimitri or Grendel's approach , I guess time will tell. Anyway, check what sets Clan of Xymox apart from many current trendy electro bands even after all these years, of course.

You may have guessed it , but I went to Europe last week and bought the single over there."

"Xymox have been one of favorite bands since the 80's. this new ep is great...the destroid re-mix of michelle is w/ out a doubt aces! the dark backdrop and the uptempo are surely enough reason to buy this ep. very pleased, very pleased indeed!"
