Synopsis

This is the initial volume of a triple-CD release of The Civil War soundtrack, and it's hard to think that the other two could equal this first installment. The Nashville Sessions evokes images of pitched tents and cannons very well. Bookended with narration by the great casting of Charlie Daniels, the compilation is filled by low-key, solemn tracks. "Old Gray Coat," starts out bleak, then kicks into a nice little country-pop song, but the lyrics uncannily convey images of a war few of us really know much about. The best song on the compilation--the lone contribution by an African American--is BeBe Winans's "River Jordan," narrated from the perspective of the black soldiers called upon to fight in the war. It's a touching, powerful gospel number that really breaks loose at the end. Other standouts include the piano ballad "Tell My Father" by Kevin Sharp and "Missing You (My Bill)" by Deana Carter. --Aaron Tassano

CD Reviews

Emotion; passion; goosebumps!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD evokes total passion and emotion. One does not have to be a lover of the Civil War to appreciate it, just a lover of freedom and America. The melodies are somber yet hopeful; the lyrics are simple yet genuine. Mental images will flash through your mind as you listen to the music of the great conflict. You are left sad, but uplifted. Buy this CD and be exposed to the very worst and the very best of America. Musically, you will be exposed to the very best!"
Music worth listening to over and over!

"I was fortunate to hear the music first and then see the perfomance in a recent visit to Houston. The cast performance was as good or better than the Nashville session. Not only is Linda Eder on both the CD and a member of the cast, Gene Miller who sings "Virginia" was also a cast member in the performance I saw and has a phenomenal voice. This music was so enjoyable that after only listening one time it felt familiar-- like an old favorite song! Highly Recommended!"
An Amazing CD

"I haven't seen the show, but I heard the song "The Day the Sun Stood Still" and I had to buy the CD. Even if you don't like Country music, I highly recommend it. The music is absolutely wonderful.

My favorite tracks are "The Day the Sun Stood Still," "Virginia," "Old Gray Coat," "Judgement Day," "Regimental Drummer," and "Last Waltz for Dixie."
