CD ReviewsCITADEL ® D'ANthologie 1 - Swords or Shields? R. Douglass-Whitman | Burbank, CA | 06/17/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "In the cavernous fissures of alternative & progressive music insurgencies, the band name CITADEL may conjure up fervent opinions & staunch debates. Indisputable are the facts that Citadel co-founded the world's first progressive music festival (ProgFest) & were the first band to ever have taken the stage at such a festival. How then could there be mixed feelings amongst the prog elite about a group synonymous with creating an event credited with birthing a worldwide movement of similar festivals? Maybe more importantly, does the elitists' opinion really matter when stacked against the 30-year tenure the band has maintained 'forever indie' with LP, CD, Tape, Book & DVD releases sold in 35 countries, crossing nearly every musical genre?
If the elite opinion matters at all, it is for one poignant point; their loose consensus that Citadel is not 'pure prog', et al, - Herein, the Citadel D'ANthologie series may corroborate such assertions - because Citadel is, if anything, 'anti-genre'. Of course, supporters argue that many Citadel songs ARE prog & Citadel's style diversity is prog in 'spirit'. Prog purists often beg to differ. Citadel's G. Whitman has been cited as remarking, "baloney, malarkey, nonsense, twaddle, hogwash, bunkum, humbug, hokum, hooey, gibberish" to such pomp. This is not genre exclusive music; it is a collection of Citadel songs featuring the Whitmans with Drummer/Producer, Dan Smart - get it? - D'ANthology? Whitman comments, "Citadel cannot be constrained to genre fetters - Citadel is a MUSIC band, so give it a rest already, style formats are a passing afterthought..." And so with you now sufficiently prepared, we cautiously introduce Citadel D'Anthologie 1: Swords or Shields? Please note the variant CD song titles, amended to aid new listeners in choosing a desired Citadel style flavor, but beware, we assume no liability for any chances taken venturing outside one's genre norm...take heed to the helpful hints...
