Album Description
CHRONIC with a K emotes a modern Americana Alternative sound with the emphasis on melody. Audiences have described The CHRONIC Sound as a 90's version of the San Francisco 60's sound that rocked an entire nation, coupled with powerful female vocals. This exciting new sound has captured new fans from all walks of life, young & old. Their lyrics speak of real life that everyone relates to. CHRONIC with a K has spawned a hot new sound for the new millennium. Leigh Stephens Leigh started playing guitar as a kid and had developed his trend setting style by the time he reached high school. He soon became an intrical part of music history as the co-founder and lead guitarist for Blue Cheer. Many music aficionados feel that Blue Cheer were the true forefathers of Heavy Metal. Leigh soon swept across the rock world helping to define the legendary San Francisco music scene. Recognized in 1976 by Cream Magazine as one of the Top 100 Guitarists of all time. It was reconfirmed again in September of 1998 when Editor & Chief, Brad Tolinski of Guitar World Magazine recognized Leigh as the number four Greatest Guitar Soloist of all time. Leigh played on the first 2 albums with Blue Cheer, Vincebus Eruptum and Outside Inside. After leaving the Cheer he went on to create two solo albums high on the collector's list, Red Weather (Phillips) and Cast of Thousands (Charisma). Leigh then formed Silver Metre with Mick Waller, who played with Jeff Beck and recorded with Rod Stewart, and Pete Sears, who went on to play with Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna. Leigh also did some studio work on Pilot (released on RCA Records). Leigh met another fellow San Francisco musician, Bassist Ron Stone at a mutual friend's in 1992 in Cool CA. And the proverbial music sparks began to fly. Starting out as a self-indulgent good time jam Ron and Leigh soon realized that their styles melded together well and a new sound was created. In 1996 Taxim Records of Germany contacted Leigh to ask if he would add a cut to their fourth coming San Francisco blues compilation CD. Ron and Leigh agreed and "CHRONIC with a K" was born. Leigh feels that CHRONIC with a K emotes a modern Americana Alternative sound with the emphasis on melody. CD Reviews

Leigh Stephens still unmistakable in Chronic With a K...

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Former Blue Cheer guitarist Leigh Stephens has resurfaced on the California music scene some 30-odd years after BC's Haight-Ashbury heyday of the sixties. His new band, Chronic With a K, and their first release, "Ride The Thunder", resembles little of that era, (albeit intentionally) focusing instead on a '90's style ranging from country-tinged ballads to put-your-foot-into-it power chord rock. Featuring vocalist/keyboardist Melissa Olsen, who sounds like she would be perfectly at home performing on the Lilith Fair tour, the set was produced by Stephens and long-time collaborator and bassist, Ron Stone. Ride The Thunder emphasizes Stephens versatility as a songwriter and showcases a surprising flexibility in his fretboard style. The title track sums up much of what this album is about. Muted staccatto picking by Leigh subtley builds into blazing power chord crescendos behind Melissa's sometimes delicate, othertimes fiery vocals. "Like A River", a Stephens-penned ballad, is strictly Melissa's vehicle, her vocals and keyboards displayed over pop-country hooks that would be at home on any number of today's Nashville efforts. "Only Make Believe" is a real-treat - the Conway Twitty classic features Leigh's guitar literally "digging" the foundation on an up-tempo arrangement that works surprisingly well. "Oops" is another surprise - you can tell Leigh had fun with this one- just when you're being lulled into the laid-back piano melody, Leigh quite unexpectedly cuts loose with a blistering knock-your-socks-off solo that flashes pure Blue Cheer again. Hey, comparisons are going to be inevitable - the man helped invent the power trio and he's not about to be suppressed on this outing. Chronic With a K is a legitimate resurfacing for Stephens and a notable debut for this band. Two minor flaws though, the drumming is a little too pedestrian throughout and Leigh leaves you wishing he's feature his guitar more - but the latter leaves us something to look forward too. I know I am."
