CD ReviewsAnd the Angels Sing! Rusty Frank | 02/02/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "Christine DiPego's premier cd is beyond wonderful! Not only is her singing absolutely heavenly, but also her choice in musician accompaniment is delicious. I run The Rhythm Club, a weekly swing dance here in Los Angeles, and when I played some tracks from "Getting To Know You" for the first time, I was thrilled, though not surprised, to see the floor instantly fill up with beaming partners. To me that is the true test of tasty music! Brava, Christine, for such a fine debut cd. Thank you for contributing so beautifully to the tradition of vocal jazz/swing music!" GETTING TO KNOW a SONGBIRD J. Webb, Jr. | North Illinois | 12/15/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "What pleasure it is -- Getting to Know Christine DiPego! To paraphrase Oscar Hammerstein: "Putting it my way, but nicely: She is precisely, `My Cup of Tea'!
Webster views the term `songbird' rather ornithologically, but nicely: (1) "A bird that utters a succession of musical tones"; and, (2) "A female singer." Well -- Hello, Christine DiPego! This CD is a songbird's songbook to not miss! Packed with heavenly musical tones by a golden-throated songbird, if my copy of this CD were, instead, a pressing in the older Vinyl-LP-format, its grooves would be flat from replay-use by now! I had recently heard that Ms. DiPego was gathering her talents to create this collection, and suddenly here it is right when we need it: HolidayTime/2004! This CD is a treasure for any collector and lover of Jazz and Vocal Standards. Dear Misters Rodgers and Hart, Marilyn and Alan Bergman, Mr. Berlin, Arthur Schwartz, Ebb and Kander, and James Taylor: You've GOT to fall for -- no, MELT for -- Ms. DiPego's instrument, style, and renditions of your masterpieces! Her jazz-ability merges perfectly into her shining love and talents for the softer sides of song-love. I used to think that Sinatra or Eydie Gorme were the only ones who could do justice to "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" and "I See Your Face Before Me". Not so! And by the time I go down the playlist to Ms. DiPego's take on "It's a Quiet Thing" -- so raucously first-offered on Broadway by the bubbliest side of a youthful Liza (Minelli, who else?) -- but nestled-into so affectionately by Ms. D.P, I'm ready to face Life once again with serenity. Production, performance, sound qualities, and arrangements are pure "ear-candy" thanks to Ian Bernard, Barry Zweig, Richard Weller, and Trey Henry -- the labors of all these creators handed-to and warmly coaxed and nurtured by Dom Camardella. Thanks, Ms. DiPego. More! Soon! Please? With sincere gratitude and admiration for your talents, I am Johnny W. As James Taylor would sing, "You've Got a Friend" -- and I would add: "I'm gonna round-up some MORE friends for you!..."" |
