CD Reviews

Try another angle!

"OMG, this is what we've all been waiting for! Over 45 minutes. . . no, almost 55 minutes. . . of pure solo triangle! As the triangle's biggest fan, I can confidently say that Balfa is a world-class master of the instrument. She can play it from any angle! She doesn't even have to try, as most triangulators do. She just lets it all hang out. Listen especially to The Balfa Waltz track, where she gets so in-the-zone that she actually can't resist vocalizing along with her triangle solo. But for the most part, it's pure solo triangle rhythm without any pesky interfering melodic or harmonic material. Truly unique in the recorded triangle opus."
A must have

"The daughter of renowned Cajun fiddler, Dewey Balfa, Christine Balfa was born with a silver 'tit fer (triangle) in her mouth. Fortunately, she was also born with innate charm, beauty and talent and was able to transform that cumbersome beginning into a gift she offers the world on Plays the Triangle. This masterly crafted CD (kudos to Valcour Records) is a must have for all triangle players and especially for wannabe triangle players. As James Blades writes in The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, "the triangle is by no means a simple instrument to play." Christine demonstrates her crackerjack skills with the strong beat of Cajun triangle playing on this CD, establishing her place among the world's most deft triangle players -Alphonse "Bois Sec" Ardoin, John Deacon of Queen, Moody Mascott of Kommando Trash, Joni Mitchell and, most of all, the angels depicted in paintings from the Middle Ages."
Best Cajun Music Album, Ever.

"The title says it all.

I'm hoping for future projects that will let her further expand the horizons of this hitherto under-valued instrument. A collaborative project like "Christine Balfa and the Black Lodge Singers" would be perfect."
