"These arrangements of the two Chopin Concertos are for piano and string quintet, arranged by the performers using the precedent set by Chopin himself, who rehearsed these pieces with string quartet. Here the pianist takes on added duty, filling in at times certain "orchestral" parts (often wind parts) in those sections where the pianist normally would be resting--this in addition to the usual solo part. One advantage of these concertos in a chamber version is that Chopin's problematic orchestration is no longer an issue; nor does one feel short-changed by a string quartet in lieu of an orchestra. Indeed, these concertos emerge as being less like display pieces, more like true chamber works though this is no doubt due in part to Fumiko Shiraga's selfless artistry. Shiraga has the all chops to handle the pianistic challenges but avoids expressive over-indulgence. Shiraga's performances can be confidently recommended. The recording quality is excellent, very tangible. Incidentally, Shiraga plays an S6 Yahama, a 6'11" piano, not the usual full-size grand."
