CD Reviews

Very enjoyable in their flashy way
Santa Fe Listener | Santa Fe, NM USA | 06/21/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Serious-minded critics fuss at Freddy Kempf for not using his flashy technique more, well, seriously. I always get a bit of a bratty rock-star vibe from Kempf's almost arrogant off-handedness. He was born to dazzle, and that seems to suit him perfectly. He certainly dazzles here. He charges every Etude; surges of sound wash over the listener. This is Chopin after a visit to a meth lab. It's all sparkle and speed. I say why not? For a change at least.

Insofar as one can place Kempf in a tradition, it's the harder-edged pianists like Pollini and Argerich who revised romantic style while adding dashes of their own personalities, not as recklessly as Horowitz but not chastely, either. Kempf takes the same tendencies a step farther into ultra-cool. Chopin's Etudes are susceptible to personality; they all but beg for it. I respond to Kempf's, which isn't to say that I will abandon Richter, Nelson Freire, and Pollini. They just have to make a little room on the end of the shelf."
My go to Chopin Etude CD

"This is my go to CD for Chopin Etudes, purely because it is technically brilliant (Freddy Kempf makes tf sound so easy on the CD and the recording of the DVD looks like a piece of cake). I'm not going to debate about the artistic articulation of this series of repertoire.

Kempf's version compare on the same level among Valentina Lisista or Maurizio Pollini) as I found the bravura of his performance more colorful in it's dynamics and the flow of the exercises more appealing.

I'd really like to see more CD/DVD"s of these sets of etudes done more often.."
