"I have owned this set for over 10 years, and it continues to offer much listening pleasure. Bolet is justly famous for his Chopin recordings, which are characterised by a strong sense of mystery, an affinity for the emotional complexities of the music, and consistent beauty of tone, supported by the exemplary Decca recording technology. He captures the mood of the Preludes perfectly, and his performances of these pieces can be recommended without hesitation as classics of the genre. On the Ballades, he is less fiery than some of his peers, and I do not think his interpretations are as strong or compelling as those of, for example, Perahia, Zimerman or Pollini, which remain in my view the reference standard for these works. However, his somewhat autumnal interpretations of Ballades No. 2 and 4 are entirely valid, given the provenance of these works, and there remains much to enjoy in his playing. The Fantasie is superbly performed and again can be recommended unreservedly."
