Synopsis

Los Angeles-born and Brooklyn-dwelling singer-songwriter Chocolate Genius (a.k.a. Marc Anthony Thompson) caused a stir in 1998 with Black Music, a haunting and heartfelt set dealing with loss, love, illness, and the nagging sense that something isn't right. Three years later Thompson, who is also an Obie-winning sound designer, returns with the equally effective Godmusic. If Black Music was drawn in shades of gray, the more structured Godmusic attempts to find some light at the end of the tunnel. On the loping guitar-fueled "Endless Fall" and the hypnotic "Love," Thompson lays claim to being one of the most humanistic songwriters since Paul Westerberg. Working with an all-star band of downtown NYC jazz/rock stalwarts spearheaded by Marc Ribot, Kevin Salem, and Chris Wood, Thompson deftly fuses country, soul, trip-hop, rock, and jazz elements with witty, world-weary lyrics that have the offhanded looseness, but that are rooted in solid songcraft. --Amy Linden

"Very, very good follow-up to an absolutely great debut. Just as the first album initially intrigued me, so does Godmusic. Over time I came consider (and still do) the first album as one of my all-time favorites, and after a good 20 or so visits with Godmusic I now have the wonderfully satisfying feeling of falling in love all over again. If you're considering buying either CG album - go out right now and do it. Just remember to give 'em time to sink in."

"Chocolate Genius, aka Marc Anthony Thompson, is a blend of Van Morrison, Jeff Buckley, Al Green and Arthur Lee. Having said that I realize my lack of words for describing his music without comparisons. This same lack of words is suchly and so forth the same as speechless. Two tracks stand out, in particular 'Love' and 'Serve You'. They are like having chocolate syrup poured on your wounds and licked clean. If you are not familiar with his work, then it is a real travesty but one easily rectified! Blackmusic is a better listen all the way through, but I would recommend BOTH blackmusic and godmusic. I know once you hear one you will not just want but NEED the other, so do yourself a fovor and order both. Don't miss a live show if you get the chance; no studio can capture the essence of Chocolate Genius, but it is enough of a glimpse, a taste, savory and juicy, to keep you salivating for more from this guy and his ever changing band....I could easily wax poetic at this point but I think you get the picture."

"Wonderful Lp from start to finish. Don't let the sounds of his mom singing 20 years ago fool you(in perifidia), the rest of the cd is just insane...give it at least five listens before you decide if you like it or not.
Every track is classic...just insane, insane music at its best.
