Even before completing this debut album, the Children's Hour earned a glowing endorsement from fellow Chicago native and former Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan. It's easy to see why: SOS JFK is full of the sun-soaked optimism and gentle sweetness that is all over his own band Zwan's 2003 debut, Mary Star of the Sea. A distinct British folk influence evokes the sentimental melodies and striking acoustic guitar virtuosity of artists like Bert Jansch and Sandy Denny, while tracks like "The Lumberjack Song" and "Kindness of Strangers" show enough bravura to fit comfortably on the shelf alongside modern artists like Hope Sandoval and Cat Power. --Aidin Vaziri
